Tilford 1st graders share music, facial expressions in concert

Playing imaginary instruments was a small part of the Tilford 1st Grade Concert Thursday. Elementary music teacher Gib Ziemer taught the first graders to use facial expressions as well as their singing voices to express the emotions of the songs they sing. And many of those students showed that they learned those lessons well, as the annual first grad concert included songs about a missing bear and a request for a lobster or rhino that the students sang while using their facial muscles to demonstrate those emotions.

VINTON GARDEN CLUB MARCH 30,2016 The Vinton Garden Club member of National Garden Clubs., District II and Central Region met 1:00 pm at the home of Sharen Stueck. The program “Prairie Plantings” speaker, Ben Bonar, IRVM Integrated Roadside Vegetation Management” presented a very interesting program. President Fran Stueck called the meeting to order at 2:25pm.

VS alum John Lippmann graduates from Law Enforcement Academy

John Lippman: VS alum graduates from Iowa Law Enforcement Academy. Former Vinton-Shellsburg Viking and Vinton resident John W.D. Lippmann graduated from the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy on April 16.  His Class, the 267th Basic Unit, completed its 14-week training at the ILEA’s Camp Dodge, in Johnston on April 14; graduation took place at the Iowa National Guard Freedom Center.  John earned the award for the 300 Point Club; and the 267th is proud that they have the most graduates (15) in the history of the academy’s classes that earned this award.

4-H: North Eden Willing Workers learn about preparing projects for Fair

Connie McClintock, a County Fair project judge, spoke about preparing 4-H projects for Fair at the North Eden Willing Workers’ April 3rd meeting. She gave helpful tips on how to create ribbon-worthy write-ups and how to interview with judges, as well as how to reduce stress on judging day. Most important for 4-Hers to remember: choosing a project at the appropriate skill level, and presenting the project to the judge with a cheerful and interested attitude.

Conway named Penquite Scholar at Central

Caitlyn Conway has been named 2016 Geisler Penquite Scholar at Central College and received a scholarship for current and potential leadership in education. Conway, of Blairstown, belongs to Central's teacher preparation program and was selected through a competitive interview process. The Scholars Program is funded by the Geisler Penquite Foundation.

VS Fine Arts Club says 'Thank you' to choir robe donors

The Vinton-Shellsburg New Century Fine Arts Club wants to thank all of those who donated to the successful fund drive for the new choir robes for Vinton-Shellsburg High School. Matthew Gerhold features original musical compositions in spring recital

Music composed by Concordia University, Nebraska students will be featured in a recital on April 20, 2016, at 7 p.m. in the Recital Hall of the Music Center on campus. Participants in the recital include: Matthew Gerhold, a freshman from Atkins, Iowa None of this music has been heard before. The student composers create the music, recruit performers for their works and organize their rehearsals, and many are participating in their own pieces as performers or conducting.

Peter Thedens Inducted into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi

Peter Thedens of Walker, Iowa, was recently initiated into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation's oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines. Thedens is pursuing a degree in Computer Engineering at Iowa State University. Thedens is among approximately 30,000 students, faculty, professional staff and alumni to be initiated into Phi Kappa Phi each year.

Katherine Hanson of Vinton, has achieved academic ranking in the top 2 percent of students in the College of Business at Iowa State University. Congratulations!
